With that in mind, Rasmussen Research released a new poll this week showing that 50 percent of Americans believe current drunk driving laws are not tough enough, while 36 percent believe that they're "about right."
The survey found women more inclined than men to believe that DUI laws are not tough enough, by a 58-42 percent margin. Adults without children were more inclined than those with children to think that the laws should be tougher, by a 54-45 percent margin.
Also, 37 percent of those surveyed said that a first-time DUI conviction should carry mandatory jail time, while 46 percent opposed that idea.
Even when fatalities are not involved, drunk driving costs everybody money because of the law enforcement, medical and insurance resources that it tends to consume over time. Those who are caught drunk driving can also usually expect a significantly higher bill from their auto insurance company after they get their license back.
