Companies Working on Type 1 Diabetes Vaccine
A new vaccine under development has the potential to save millions of people money on their health insurance premiums in the coming years while also boosting their life expectancy and overall well-being.
An announcement from Linkoping University in Sweden says that Swedish company Diamyd Medical is working with a pharmaceutical company owned by Johnson & Johnson to fund phase 3 trials of the vaccine, which could be on the market as early as 2012.
The university also noted that the deal involves another $580 million in funding for a later stage after the current trials, which are underway in Europe and the United States.
A type 1 diabetes vaccine will benefit millions of people who depend on insulin to maintain their normal functions and who often must pay dramatically higher life and health insurance premiums due to this pre-existing condition.
However, millions of Americans have also been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which is generally brought on by a mix of genetics and poor diet and lack of exercise. For those people, a healthy lifestyle is still the best bet when it comes to avoiding the burden of diabetes.
