Government Initiatives Focus on Pedestrian Safety

The Department of Transportation is taking new steps to help reduce pedestrian safety - which could help motorists control auto insurance rates by promoting better traffic safety.

According to a recent DOT announcement, the Walk Friendly Communities initiative allows municipalities to apply for designation under the program. By doing so, these communities will gain additional access to resources and information that will help them further improve their public safety.

"We are committed to giving Americans more choices that foster active, livable communities," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "This initiative will do just that by improving pedestrian safety in areas across the country and providing a safe means of walking in and around their neighborhood."

Motorists who operate carelessly around pedestrians could find themselves facing legal charges and higher auto insurance rates if they injure one or cause some other type of accident.

Amid such concerns, motorists can do their part by avoiding distractions and by obeying the speed limit as well as crosswalk laws and stop signs. For their part, pedestrians can keep themselves safe by wearing reflective clothing at night and using sidewalks and crosswalks.
