Life Insurance a Wise Investment for Even the Young and Healthy

Many consumers may be inclined to wonder if they need life insurance because they are still young and healthy. However, many other things besides sickness can cut an individual's life short, leaving loved ones facing years of financial instability as a result.

For example, despite the best efforts of state and federal safety officials, thousands of people are killed each year in highway crashes, many of which involve alcohol.

As a result, the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced the start of its annual "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest." campaign. According to the DOT, 8 percent of all drivers - about 17 million people - have driven while drunk at least once in the past year.

"Drunk driving is deadly, it's against the law, and unfortunately, it's still a problem," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "With the help of law enforcement around the country, we are going to continue doing all that we can to stop drunk driving and the needless tragedies that result from this reckless behavior."

The DOT also noted that those who drink and drive tend to be heavier alcohol consumers than most others. In a federal survey, 28 percent of those who acknowledged drinking and driving said they drank an average of three days per week, while only 10 percent of those who said they did not drink and drive consumed that much.
