Thieves are also said to still be targeting more expensive vehicles as well as components such as air bags. Despite falling crime rates, the FBI has also indicated that a car is still stolen in the U.S. every 28.8 seconds.

Improved technology and security measures have gone a long way towards bringing down these rates, allowing police to better track stolen vehicles and consumers to better keep thieves out of their cars in the first place.

Police have also been using more bait cars in crime-plagued neighborhoods to crack down on thieves. For example, a large insurance company recently announced it had donated a bait car to authorities in Oakland County, Michigan. The cars are altered in a way to capture thieves who try to steal them.

Efforts such as that are said to be saving people in Michigan and elsewhere more money when they check for online auto insurance quotes.
